Marceline resident recipient of 2015 Citizen Driver Award

Truck stop in Oak Grove, MO renamed in her honor

Marceline, MO The City of Marceline is proud to announce that local resident and long-haul truck driver, Sandy Long has been awarded the TravelCenters of America LLC., 2015 Citizen Driver Award.  In honor of this recognition, the TA Travel Center located in Oak Grove, Missouri has been renamed the Sandy Long / TA Travel Center.

Sandy Long, from Marceline, has been driving professionally for 42 years, with an annual mileage of 137,000, with career mileage of 3 million miles without an accident.  This has earned her 3 different safety awards from 3 different fleets.  Sandy is not only a highly responsible truck driver, but is very positive about her profession - and still makes caring for her elderly mother a priority.  Sandy is a Senior Life member of OOIDA.  She is a staff writer for ExpediteNow/Road Gorilla magazines and Canadian Trucking Magazine, and has contributed articles to OOIDA's Landline Magazine, as well as maintaining her own popular blog.  She is a charter and active member of the Women in Trucking Association, and was an Influential Women of the Year nominee in 2013.

TravelCenters launched the Citizen Driver program in 2013 in an effort to honor the many great, hardworking professional truck drivers that keep our economy going.  Citizen Drivers not only have an exemplary career in trucking, they are great examples of the kind of people who honor the great profession of truck driving.

"I am very honored and humbled to be chosen for this award," said Ms. Long. "What I do outside of the seat to help others to enter the trucking industry, be successful, and promote the positive image of truck drivers is not done for the recognition, but to pass on all the help I've received during my career."

There are  3 million professional truck drivers.  Their impact on the average American's life is largely unknown and underappreciated.  Consider that these professional drivers delivered 67% of the total domestic tonnage in 2012 representing 80% of the nation's freight value.  They make deliveries to every major city and small town across the country, enduring all types of weather and driving conditions.

A luncheon will be held in her honor at 11:00 am, Monday, May 11, 2015 at the newly renamed Sandy Long / TA Travel Center, located at 100 N. Broadway, Oak Grove, Missouri.
