John Wright has been appointed as the Chief of Police for the City of Marceline
effective September 18, 2023.
John Wright was born and raised in Marceline, Mo where he attended Marceline
High School and graduated in 1981. While attending school he participated in
many sports. In 1980 he received all conference honors in football, leading to a
scholarship to play football at St. Mary’s of the Plains College in Dodge City
Kansas.
In 1985 Wright was hired as a Marceline Police Officer working his way up to
Police Sargent in 1988. During this time, he attended the Missouri Highway
Patrol Academy in 1986 earning his basic law enforcement certification and
hundreds of hours of police training. He left the Marceline Police
Department in 1989.
In 1990 Wright was hired as Bucklin City Marshal. While there he continued
with his law enforcement training, receiving hundreds more hours of police
training.
In 2002 Wright received a Presidential Accommodation from President George W.
Bush and also recognition from Missouri State Senate and Missouri House of
Representatives for a train vs vehicle crash where he pulled a four-year-old out
for the wreckage and attending to her medical needs until medical services
arrived and she survived the crash.
Wright continued to work for the City of Bucklin and in 2009 Wright was given
the opportunity to work as the City Clerk and City Marshal for the City. While
in this position Wright had to work with all other law enforcement agencies in
Linn County, building a solid relationship with these organizations.
Wright continued to work for City of Bucklin until April 2017 where he was hired
by the Marceline Police Department as Captain and again receiving hundreds more
hours of police training.
Wright has shown over 37 years of dedication to law enforcement and the
communities of Linn County.
